You may ask is tithing still done in the New Testament Church and did Jesus mention the tithe in the Gospel? Here is what Jesus told the religious people in His time.

Matthew 22:15-22 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. 16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. 17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? 18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? 19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. 20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? 21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s. 22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way. KJV

The first thing I think we need to think about before we do away with tithing in the New Testament Church is that Jesus during His time here practiced tithing, so shouldn’t we? Jesus who fulfilled all of God’s requirement did not fail to tithe. So should we just give up tithing because we think tithing is just for those under the Law, or was it just under the law? Tithing began in Genesis and continues through the whole Bible, before the law, under the law and after the law. Adam and Eve and their sons gave to God what was His in the Garden. Abraham tithed before the Law. He tithed to Melchizedek. Jesus was made priest according to the order of Melchizedek. So Jesus receives our tithe today.

Hebrews 7:21 For those who formerly became priests received their office without its being confirmed by the taking of an oath by God, but this One was designated and addressed and saluted with an oath, The Lord has sworn and will not regret it or change His mind, You are a Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. The purpose of tithing:
• By the tithe we are giving material expression of our heart’s desire to honor and glorify God.
Prov 3:9 Honor the Lord with thy substance and with the firstfruits of all thine increase. KJV
• Even though God has no need, God has provided tithing as an opportunity for material expression of our love and devotion and worship. God receives the tithe as worship.
• Tithing expresses and demonstrates our faith in God and His promises of financial increase. If Christians are able to trust God for their eternal outcome and why wouldn’t they be able to trust Him with a tithe of their income.
• Tithing provides finances for carrying out God’s work on the earth. Rich or poor everyone is given the financial responsibility and opportunity to have an equal part in financing the work of God through tithing. God doesn’t need us for He could speak the Gospel and it would be spread around the world but He doesn’t. Instead He uses us. He permits us to be a partner in getting His Gospel out to the world.
Tithing elevates the work of God through the Church above the level of beggars expecting a handout from the world. God through the tithe has made provision for His work to be financed by His own people and not the Babylonian world system. Sad to say a large percentage of Christians do not tithe and so now the Church has to use the world’s methods to getting finances to do the Lord’s work; yard sales, garage sales, rummage sales, book sales, bake sales, spaghetti dinners, chicken dinners, ice cream socials, etc.. God’s way of financing His work has always been and will continue to be through the tithes of His people.
Malachi 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in
mine house,… KJV
• Tithing also gives us an opportunity to acknowledge that everything we have really is owned by God and He has made us stewards of all that is His.
• Why would we not want to tithe in the New Testament Church with promises like these? Malachi 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. KJV
• The tithe is the key that opens the storehouse of God’s richest blessings and is the way to perpetual prosperity so why would we not want to tithe and be left to the world’s measly, insufficient increase they promise and then it’s taken away by more taxes, utility cost increase, food prices rising, etc. Unlike the Babylonian world system, notice God’s promises in Malachi 3:10 have no fine print or disclaimers.
• Look at this scripture of tithing increase, Proverbs 3:9-10 Honor Jehovah with thy substance, And with the first-fruits of all thine increase: 10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, And thy vats shall overflow with new wine. ASV This promise talks about “filled with plenty and overflow”. This kind of promise you will not find nowhere in this world for sure!
• By tithing the Lord becomes a partner with us and we become a partner with Him. This means we cannot fail with God as our partner! What financial problem or otherwise is there God cannot solve? This then is the answer—tithing!
• By tithing then we are not using that which belongs to God and we avoid the curse that comes with that. Malachi 3:9 You are cursed with the curse, for you are robbing Me, even this whole nation. AMP No language is more plain or easier to understand than is given here! Failure to tithe is stealing from God and His Church to get the Gospel out and Jesus can’t come back until the Gospel has been preached in all the whole world. Only in eternity will it be revealed the financial failures, the heartaches, the doctor bills, the divorces and families destroyed, the suffering of the pressures from this Babylonian system of money that came to the Church who did not obey with the tithe but instead stole the tithe from God and His work in the earth.
• Failure to tithe is to look God in the face and say, “I don’t believe you nor trust you.” If we believed what God has promised to the tither we would want to be obedient and give Him His tithe. The only reason for not tithing is unbelief! It is not only robbing God but also calling Him a liar!
• When we don’t tithe we reject God as a partner and deny Him His ownership. It’s saying to Him that we don’t need Him and we can get by on our own.
• To not tithe is to hinder the work of God! God forbid that any of us should be guilty of this. God has set tithing as a way to finance His work and failing to tithe is an effort to thwart God’s plan. It is stealing from God’s work to satisfy personal desires and squandering it on ourselves. This is without a doubt the worst kind of stealing!
• Failure to tithe is keeping the world from coming to Christ. Everyone of us who have come into the Kingdom were able to hear the Gospel because some of God’s people were tithing and supplying the financial means for sending forth the Gospel. Romans 10:14 But how are people to call upon Him Whom they have not believed [in Whom they have no faith, on Whom they have no reliance]? And how are they to believe in Him [adhere to, trust in, and rely upon Him] of Whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher? AMP
God has ordained preachers, teachers, evangelists, missionaries, etc. to be sent forth to preach the Gospel of the Kingdom and that is made possible when God’s people tithe. If none or a few of God’s people tithed then their ministry would be greatly hindered and even stopped.
• To fail to tithe is a person’s choice to close the mouth of God’s servants and the lost be denied the right to hear the Gospel of the Kingdom!
• When viewed from all angles, a failure to tithe is a grievous sin, a hideous sin!
