- An offering doesn’t deliver you from the bondage of debt even when you experience a temporary alleviation from the burden of debt.
You watch telethons and preachers get a word that God is going to deliver you out of debt if you just sow a seed. Then they share testimonies of how God wiped out debt. Thank God for the miracle when they functioned in giving and receiving for that does work. I am not denying that. But if those individuals got into debt because of things they did wrong in the handling of their finances and there was a wrong relationship with money; they are going to get back into debt if they are given the same circumstances until they truly repent. You have to understand I believe in giving offerings but at the same time I want you to clearly see the burden of debt will not be alleviated just by offerings. I want to tell you the truth so you can get free. You hear preachers on these telethons preach a lot about the woman in Elisha’s day who had incurred debt and the creditor was coming to get her sons and God gave her an awesome deliverance. 2 Kings 4:1-7 A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves." 2 So Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?" And she said, "Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil." 3 Then he said, "Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors — empty vessels; do not gather just a few. 4 And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones." 5 So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. 6 Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, "Bring me another vessel." And he said to her, "There is not another vessel." So the oil ceased. 7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest." NKJV Preachers use that scripture and preach that all you need to do to get out of debt is sow a seed and God will deliver you. But if you look closely at that scripture that widow didn’t sow a seed. That widow heard the word of the prophet and obeyed his word and God delivered her. There was no seed sowing or no offering. She simply heard the word of the Lord from the prophet and obeyed by gathering the vessels and filling them with oil until she had filled all the pots she had collected. She then went out and sold the oil. God took what was in her hand and multiplied it so much she paid off the debt and had abundance left over so she never again had to get back into the bondage of debt. God wants to do the same for you if you will truly repent and change your ways. God can free a drug addict from drugs but if they decide to go back into drugs God will not stop them. The same is true with debt in your life, He will deliver you but you can choose to go back into debt. True lasting deliverance happens when you repent and change your thinking and your ways of handling money your way. |
