Mark 10:21-23 (KJV) Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. 22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

Now religious people stop right there but Jesus did not stop right there.

Mark 10:24-30 (KJV) And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved? 27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible. 28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. 29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, 30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

The rich young ruler said he did all these religious things and he kept the commandments; but Jesus told him to sell what he had and give to the poor and he would have treasure in heaven, take up the cross and follow me.

Let’s see from other scripture what it tells us about giving to the poor.

Proverbs 19:17 (KJV) He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

That tells us the person who gives to the poor isn’t going to lose any money.

Many people know scripture religiously but have no revelation knowledge of it or do not believe what they read. Also, it’s amazing how people can keep hearing the Word and have no intention of acting on it.  When Jesus told this man to do an act of faith, this man walked away.  You don’t want to be like that.

Let’s see what else it says about giving to the poor.

Proverbs 28:27 (KJV) He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.

We see here again when we give to the poor we shall not lack.

Jesus gave to the poor all the time and so when Judas left to betray Jesus the other disciples thought he left to give to the poor.

The Lord will deliver us in time of trouble when we consider the poor.

Psalm 41:1-3 (KJV) Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble. 2 The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies. 3 The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.

Let’s look at verse 3 in the New Living Translation.

Psalm 41:3 (NLT2) The LORD nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.

Because you give to the poor the Lord will deliver you in the time of trouble, preserve and keep you alive, you will be blessed on the earth, the Lord will not deliver you into the will of your enemies and the Lord will nurse you when you are sick and restore your health.  We are not only blessing and helping the poor, but we also see there are benefits to giving to the poor.  God will replace what you gave, you will never lack and if you get sick the Lord will raise you up.

Jesus worked all of this because He worked it as a man.

There are benefits in giving to the poor and giving is what we do as a Christian because we love the poor and are in obedience to the Lord Jesus as He told the rich young ruler.

2 Corinthians 9:6-9 (KJV) But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: 9 (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever.

Giving to the poor was a part of Jesus’ ministry and it is still a part of Jesus’ ministry today because you are His body.

As you give to the poor, just believe God that you are not going to lack for anything, and you are being obedient to the command of the Lord to give to the poor and you will be never suffer loss from it for it is the Kingdom way to be blessed and every need be met for ourselves.
