Paul was a captive of the Roman government on a ship that was on its way to Rome. After getting on the ship the Holy Spirit revealed to him they were going to experience a ship wreck.
Acts 27:10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives. KJV
Paul perceived in his spirit they would lose the cargo and the ship and everyone on board was in danger of losing their lives. Paul said, “I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage.” Paul didn’t say that God told him this, he said he perceived this. He just had a knowing in his spirit this was going to happen to them.
Where we get into trouble a lot of times is we will perceive something by the Spirit of God and then we will say God told us this or that when in truth God spoke nothing to us.
Paul was in a ship in a tremendous storm and they had to throw the cargo overboard and then they were 14 days without food. But then in verse 22 of Acts 27 Paul says,
Acts 27:22-24 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but of the ship.23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, 24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. KJV
Here is what I want you to see, Paul perceived they were going to lose the ship and their lives and that was where they were headed.
There are times people get something in their spirit, they will perceive something through their spirit man, they will have a revelation of something and then they will say God told them something and this is going to happen. What happens is similar to what happened with Paul when an angel appeared to him and told him they will lose the ship and the cargo but their lives would be spared. God was going to intervene.
A lot of times the Lord will reveal to us what Satan has planned for us, what will happen if it doesn’t go unchecked, and what Satan’s plan is if the Father doesn’t intervene. Then those who are not used to this or not trained in this will automatically when they perceive something in their spirit make the error by saying, “God told me,” And then they will proceed and tell what is going to happen. When what God was doing was He wanted them to know the plans of the enemy against them so that they could use their authority and stop it from happening. They perceive these things and think that because what has been revealed to them is bad then it is the devil speaking to them, giving them evil imaginations. And so the person will actually rebuke the Holy Spirit thinking that it’s the devil. The Holy Spirit was giving them a warning. I believe it has been the mercy of the Lord that has kept God’s people from harm until we have learned better.
Paul in Acts 27:22-24 didn’t think the warning of the angel was the enemy talking to him. He realized this was the Holy Spirit speaking to him and the Lord intervened and they were saved. The angel came and told Paul the Father had spared every one of the 276 people onboard.
Again we must understand this very important thing that the Lord will often reveal to us what the plans of the enemy against us or what will happen if there is no intervention. So we must recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit in the perception of the things that we discern or the things that are revealed to us.
Always, when the Father reveals something bad that is going to happen there is just about always a level or a measure of peace that goes with it. It could be the worst thing you can imagine and yet there is a peace that comes with it. But the opposite is true when the devil brings an imagination and fear always accompanies it. It is that simple to understand which one is speaking to you, the Father with His peace or the devil speaking to you with fear attached. God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love and of a sound mind.
So if a man or woman of God gets up and speaks a word it should not stir up a spirit of fear but you should experience perfect peace. A word from the Lord will not have any fear accompanying it.
I will never forget the night President Obama won the General Election to be elected President of the United States. I felt in my spirit there was going to be great problems ahead for my nation but at the same time I felt an unforgettable peace. I believe it was the peace the bible speaks of as a “peace that passes all understanding”.
You discern bad things are going to happen but yet at the same time you just know that you know it is going to be all right and yet you don’t have many details.
The night of the election the reason there was peace was not because President Obama was elected President but instead that peace that came all over me was because I knew God was in control of things by the Spirit of God.
I believe there are days ahead when the Lord will warn us of dangers and we need to be obedient to His instructions in what we must do but this warning will come with a peace. And with that peace we are able to make wise decisions in the matter. Fear only bring chaos to a situation and you never make right decisions. It is so important that we recognize this.
