How the Spirit of God Speaks to Us

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. KJV

When the Holy Spirit speaks to us how do we know if it’s the Father or Jesus?  I have said that it was the Father talking to us but it tells us in scriptures that the Holy Spirit is the one who is talking and giving the instructions.

It’s just like when the Holy Spirit spoke to Peter in Acts 10:19,20:

Acts 10:19-20 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them. KJV

Or it’s just like Philip when the angel of the Lord told him to take a certain highway:

Acts 8:26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. KJV

Or it is like Paul when he was told by the angels their lives would be spared:

Acts 27:24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. KJV

When we experience the ministry of angels we can know their voice just like we can by reason of use know the voice of the Father, the voice of Jesus and the voice of the Holy Spirit.  They are all distinct.

Heb 5:14 … by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. KJV

By reason of use we train our spiritual senses to discern between good and evil and by reason of use of our spiritual senses we can make distinction between the voice of the Father, the voice of Jesus and the voice of the Holy Spirit and the voice of angels.

The Holy Spirit is not an impressionist but He is the link between heaven and earth, the link between the Father and the earth and the link between Jesus and the earth.

Jesus told us in John 15:26 the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and He testifies of Jesus:

John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: KJV

Think about it this way that the Father is a spirit:

John 4:24 God is a Spirit:  KJV

In the same way remember the story Jesus told about how the beggar, Lazarus, was in Abraham’s bosom or Paradise with Abraham and the rich man was in Hell in torment and the rich man asked Lazarus to get him some water.  Both men’s spirit and soul were with them in Paradise and in Hell and that is because the spirit and the soul are eternal.  You cannot ever separate a spirit and a soul.  Only God can do that.

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, KJV

The Word of God can separate between the soul and spirit.  And certainly God, the Creator, can do that.

The spirit and soul are linked, connected and we can discern the slight differences.  Let’s say you are in bed at night and your body is lying there relaxed on the bed. Your mind is still working and your mind looks down on the inside of you to look at your true motives and what you think and when  you examine deeply your life that is your spirit man that you are examining.

God the Father and His Spirit, they operate as spirit and soul.  The Holy Spirit precedes from the Father in the same way your soul proceeds from your spirit.  Jesus represents the body, the physical representation of God in the same way your physical body is the representation of your spirit and soul.

Here’s a good example in the scriptures of what I am talking about:

In Matt 3:16 Jesus comes out of the water after being baptized and Father God speaks from heaven and then the Link, Holy Spirit, comes down upon Jesus with Jesus being in the body.  There is the spirit, soul and body.  You got the Father, Holy Spirit and then the body that is Jesus.

It is not that the Holy Spirit is an impressionist when Jesus spoke in John 16:13 and Paul wrote in 1 Cor 2:10,11 but the Holy Spirit is the link from the Father to us.

John 16:13 He will not speak of himself but whatsoever he shall hear,…KJV

1 Cor 2:10,11 …for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.11 …even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. KJV

In the same way that our minds examine what’s really down in our heart and our deepest motives, the Holy Spirit is also examining the heart of the Father and so the Holy Spirit communicates that precisely and accurately.

There are times in a church service when the presence of the Lord is so heavy and no one wants to speak.  There is such a presence of God, there is a stillness and a weightiness, it’s like a weight, a concentration, a denseness of the Spirit of God so much so no one wants to talk or even move.  This is the presence of Father because Father is the Source of it all.  Father’s spirit feels very dense.  When He is addressing issues it is very deep down in your core, “What are you doing with your life?” type of thing.  So that is why in Father God’s presence people don’t want to talk but instead sit still and absorb what He is doing and most of the time they can’t tell He is doing anything but they know down inside, in their spirit there is something going on.  That is the time when Father God is ministering but the Holy Spirit communicates that.  That is the Father and His Spirit and so the Holy Spirit is right there.

Now when the Holy Spirit ministers according to the heart of Jesus He deals with emotional issues and physical issues and there is a little lighter feeling.  Jesus deals more about plans for your life than purposes in life like the Father does.  Jesus is more about plans in life and what He has got for you.  So there is a bit of distinction right there.
So the Holy Spirit can say like He said to Peter, “Don’t doubt that these guys are sent.  I have sent them.”  And you don’t know if “I” means the Holy Spirit or the Father.  Either way it’s the Holy Spirit who is speaking for He is the link, He is the only One who is active in ministry today on the earth.

Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven.  He is active in ministry in the sense that He is the Head of the body and is directing the body by the Spirit of God.  But as far as active in ministry on the earth right now it is really the Holy Spirit.

When Paul saw Jesus in Acts 9 on the Road to Damascus or in Acts 18 when the Lord appeared to Paul at night and told him to stay in Corinth or Acts 22 when he is in Jerusalem worshipping; it is really Jesus but Jesus is in the spirit.  Jesus is in the spirit realm and when you see Jesus your eyes are opened to the spirit realm.

There will come a time where Jesus is physically back on the earth but right now everything is done in the spirit with Him and it is the Holy Spirit who is ministering here now on the earth.
