Jesus tells us in John 16:13 the Holy Spirit will guide, speak and show us things to come.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. KJV

Recorded in Luke 2:26 there is a story about man named Simeon who is an old man and the Holy Spirit revealed to him he would see Jesus, the Messiah before he died.

Luke 2:26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. KJV

When the Holy Spirit revealed to Simeon he would see Christ before he died Simeon did not hear a voice.  He did not hear the Father and the Holy Spirit speak to him.  But it says that it was revealed to him he would not die before he saw the Messiah.  He knew it down in His spirit man.  He just had a knowing, a strong impression in his spirit he would see the Messiah.

Having a knowing or a strong impression in your spirit is an important thing for us to recognize because lots of time we talk about perceiving things, Jesus perceived the thoughts of the religious leaders or perceived that power had gone out of Him, and lots of times people inaccurately think and will say the Lord told them something when what really happened was they perceived something that the lord had revealed to them.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. KJV

Two-thirds of the ways the Holy Spirit speaks to us is nonverbal.

He will speak and he will show us things to come.  Of course the Holy Spirit speaks to us and that is definitely verbal but I am covering how the Holy Spirit reveals things to us.

The Holy Spirit revealed an event to Simeon where he would see the Messiah before he died.  God didn’t speak to him anything.  Simeon never heard any words.  The Holy Spirit didn’t speak words to Simeon but rather the Holy Spirit revealed this to Simeon.

Things that are revealed to us by the Holy Spirit the non-Christian world would call it “premonition” or “we had a hunch” or the type of thing where you just know if you will drive around the row of cars again there will be a parking space open when you get back around.  It is just like that.

One time my husband and I were in Florida and we were packing up and going to another city and I just felt that something bad was going to happen.  It was a strong impression I felt in my spirit man and yet I was too busy packing to give it much time in prayer and so when we got on the road a truck in front of us had old rusty, wrecked cars on the bed and a piece of metal came off of the bed of the truck and hit the road and we ran over it which gave us a flat tire.  Had I paid attention to the prompting of the Spirit by my spirit man we could have avoided this.  But God was merciful and when we got to the city we were driving to they repaired the tire for free.  The Holy Spirit was trying to tell me, reveal to me in my spirit man something was going to happen; I had a strong sense something was going to happen and it felt like it was not going to be good.  The world would have called that a “premonition” but I call it guidance by the Holy Spirit but in a nonverbal way.
