138 - JESUS IS OUR SABBATH, OCT 27, 2015

Hebrews 4:9-10 So then, there is still awaiting a full and complete Sabbath-rest reserved for the [true] people of God; 10 For he who has once entered [God’s] rest also has ceased from [the weariness and pain] of human labors, just as God rested from those labors peculiarly His own. AMP

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the Sabbath rest and it is something every Christian should meditate in order to get its full benefits.

I remember as a child growing up on a farm we always went to church on Sunday and we never worked in the cornfield or hoed the garden or cut hay and such on Sunday because that was supposed to be the day of rest. Many Christians still observe Sunday as a day of rest but they have no revelation that the Sabbath rest is not a day we are to observe but the Sabbath rest is a person Christ Jesus and His finished work that brings us into a rest from all human efforts and human labors trying to get what Christ has already provided for us through His finished work.

There are many Christians today who observe the Sabbath as a day of rest and never have a clue of the rest provided by Christ’s finished works. They may not do physical labor but they sit around all that day laboring in their worry how they are going to get well and be anxious what the doctor’s diagnosis is going to be tomorrow, they worry what they are going to do when they get laid off from their job this week, they calculate from their budget how they are going to pay their next mortgage payment due tomorrow, and so forth and so on and they never enter into the true Bible Sabbath rest.

Hebrews 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. KJV

The Law in the Old Testament gave instruction about the Sabbath Rest. So the Israelites set aside one day to cease from their labors while nations around them labored seven days a week. Israel prospered above them because this rest was about trusting in God as their Source and Supply and not trusting in their human labor.

When the Lord wanted the Israelites in the wilderness to enter into Canaan, their promise land God had prepared for them to take, they perished because they entered not into the rest of what God had already made ready for them to enter into. We think they were stupid for staying in the wilderness for forty years and not entering into the rest God prepared for them but we do the same today when we worry and are anxious and fearful about our health and our finances and such as is common for using all human efforts and human labor to make something happen.

We find that among Christians today. They observe the day and worry and are anxious and troubled about many things all day because they don’t see Christ as their Sabbath who placed them into a rest by His finished work where they can access all things provided by His finished work. Jesus is the Sabbath Rest and it’s His finished work that has provided all things that mankind would or could ever need any day of the week without their mere human effort and mere human work. The Church must seize from their human efforts and human labor to get all that Christ has provided through His finished work or they will enter into unbelief just as the Israelites did and not enter their promise land of all the promises we find in this New Testament Covenant.

Hebrews 4:11 Let us therefore be zealous and exert ourselves and strive diligently to enter that rest [of God, to know and experience it for ourselves], that no one may fall or perish by the same kind of unbelief and disobedience [into which those in the wilderness fell]. AMP

Everything we see demonstrated in the Old Testament was a type and shadow of what we would have as New Testament believers. They were copies and illustrations of what Christ would provide for the Church today. A shadow is a vague outline resembling of what is to come. An example would be that my shadow has the shape of me. If I were to come around the corner my shadow would arrive ahead of me. You could see it and understand that a person was coming. You could make out my shape and know certain things about my height, weight and even length of hair. But you wouldn’t be able to fully interrupt what I look like by my shadow; that is not until you see me face to face. The same is true with the Old Testament, the Law was a foreshadowing of what Christ would be and do for us. It gave guidelines and regulations but these served merely to point us to the Savior, the reality found in Him. At that time when they looked they could see certain things about who the Savior would be but they did not have a clear picture but just the shadow of what was coming.

As New Testament believers we can look back and fully understand these things and see Jesus woven throughout the entire scriptures and we can see Jesus our Sabbath of rest when we look at the first Sabbath recorded in Genesis 2.

Genesis 2:1-3 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. KJV

God didn’t rest because he was tired from all his labor. No He rested because He had finished all that needed to be created and made. The Sabbath in the Old Testament was a symbol of Jesus Christ’s finished work and now it is a New Testament reality. Jesus hanging on the Cross said,

John 19:30 … It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. KJV

Jesus our Sabbath Rest finished all His redemptive work for us and now we don’t observe a day but we enter into rest by receiving Christ our Sabbath and receiving all Christ provided for us through His finished work. We enter into rest every day of the week and receive Jesus’ New Testament divine health, divine wealth, divine favor, Jesus’ righteousness, divine peace and joy, and so much more we find in the New Testament.

We have the real Sabbath Rest in Christ Jesus. We have the expressed image of God, everything the Law and prophets spoke in Christ Jesus. Since we have the fulfillment of these things, there is no need to live under the shadow of what was coming. The same is true for the Sabbath day,

Colossians 2:16,17Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. NIV

The Church has to look at the Old Testament through the filter of Jesus otherwise we will remain in confusion and never progress into full revelation of who God is and certainly will not receive all He provided for us in Christ. Instead we will continue living under the very things like sickness and disease and working for all our provision that we have been freed from through Christ’s finished work.

We can and we must trust in the finished work of Christ and enter into rest continually so that we obtain the promises left us by the finished work of Christ. We don’t have to one day a week cease from manual labor but every day of our lives enter into Christ’s rest, ceasing from all human efforts to get what Christ’s finished work has already provided. We do not need to add one thing to Christ’s finished work for us. Jesus provided the way for our divine provision and divine health and divine wealth, etc. and we don’t need to add our mere human effort to it. Jesus is our rest from all human labor to provide for what we need. We don’t need to try and make ourselves righteous before God because Jesus became sin for us who knew no sin that we might be made the righteousness of God in Christ. We don’t need to seek human efforts to get well because Jesus bore all our sickness, weakness and pain and by His stripes we are healed and made whole. We can’t think like the world that works for a living but we instead enter into the rest that Jesus became a curse for us so that we could receive The Blessing to increase us more and more. We can enter into a state of rest every day come what may because Jesus came for this very purpose to destroy the works of the devil. Jesus is our Rest from all mere human labor and effort to get these things and by trusting in His provision we rest from trying to do it by our own mere human efforts. Without the rest in Christ, all human efforts to get what Christ has already provided for us will only lead us to more sickness in our bodies, mental torment in our soul, financial shortage and pressure of this world and open the door to all destruction of the enemy. That’s how dangerous it is to not daily enter into Christ’s rest. As the Bible tells us that God’s people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge and in this case it is lack of revelation of the Sabbath rest through Christ and His finished work to provide all we need. This is the true Sabbath rest God intended and desires for His people.

This rest is so much more than most people’s interpretation of the Old Testament scriptures about the Sabbath day. The Sabbath is fulfilled in Jesus and knowing this amazing truth will equip you for a lifestyle of trusting in God and finding constant rest in Christ.

Mark 2:27 Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. NLT

So if we want to enter into the true rest then we are going to have to find out and receive all Jesus our Sabbath Rest has already provided through His finished work. Then we will truly enter into the rest from obtaining our health from mere human means and enter into the rest of God providing for us and instead of bearing the weight of our own provision and we will no longer think we are sinners saved by grace because Jesus’ finished work has made us the righteousness of God in Christ and we are in reality saints everyone. His righteousness is such an important revelation because it is by Christ Righteousness that we know that we have the right to receive all Christ’s finished work has given us.

So enter into the rest of Christ by taking as your own all that Christ has provided for you when He declared, “It is finished.” Enter into rest instead of worrying about what the doctor’s diagnosis was. Enter into the rest of Christ by not allowing the care and the weight of your own provision become your work. The Lord never intended for you to bear the weight of your own provision. For you to work for your provision is not trusting in the finished work of Christ to provide it for you.

Hebrews 4:9-11 So then, there is still awaiting a full and complete Sabbath-rest reserved for the [true] people of God; 10 For he who has once entered [God’s] rest also has ceased from [the weariness and pain] of human labors, just as God rested from those labors peculiarly His own. 11 Let us therefore be zealous and exert ourselves and strive diligently to enter that rest [of God, to know and experience it for ourselves], that no one may fall or perish by the same kind of unbelief and disobedience [into which those in the wilderness fell].
